Embark on an adventure into “the land of a thousand hills” navigating through the misty Rwandan rainforests, rugged mountains, webs of swamps and lakes and towering volcanoes to experience a close encounter like no other, with one of the most highly endangered species on the planet, the Silverback Mountain Gorilla. Rwanda’s war torn reputation coupled with the darkness of the 1994 genocide, deemed the country devoid of natural assets and was left alone during this period, ironically it allowed the Government to focus on successfully protecting the endangered primates and now stands as a forerunner in adventure and eco-tourism. Begin your expedition in bustling Kigali, Rwanda’s capital on a guided city tour which includes a visit to the Genocide Memorial centre, a thought provoking reminder of the country’s troubled history but notably the incredible resilience of the Rwandan people. Trek to the slopes of the Virunga Volcano and experience the greatest animal encounter ever as you observe a family of gorillas in their dense natural habitat whilst being aware of the distinct feeling that you are being observed by intellectual enigmas. Marvel at the rich culture and ancient heritage of Rwanda during a visit to the Iby’Iwacu traditional village nestled between rolling hills and aromatic tea plantations. A remarkable short journey into a land forgotten for an encounter to remember for a lifetime.

On this day After breakfast you will report at the ORTPN headquarters where your driver-guide will help you accomplish the necessary formalities. You will meet your ranger guide(s) for a briefing about the greatest animal experience ever and will be transferred to the slopes of one of the Virunga volcanoes for your Gorilla trekking. The Gorillas you will track belong to one of seven habituated family groups who can tolerate the presence of humans for a brief period every day. Your trek will be an exciting journey along forested slopes, entwined vines, bushes and bamboo before you eventually reach the Gorillas’ habitat. En-route, your guide will point out signs of previous Gorilla activity, including dung, nests and chewed bamboo shoots. The time taken to track the Gorillas can take as little as 2 hours to as much as 7 hours before one returns to the camp! Once the Gorillas have been located, your group will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them. Coming face-to-face with a Mountain Gorilla is a truly humbling and emotional experience. This is a fantastic and privileged opportunity to get up close and personal with such majestic primates. After the trekking, we visit the Iby'Iwacu traditional village (a community based tourism project where the local community displays the traditional ways of living), enjoy a hearty lunch in Musanze before making our way back to Kigali , with several stops will be made to admire the scenery.
